Do you let contractors work in your house when you're not home?

I have to get some work done and my schedule doesn't exactly match up with the guys that were hired to do the work.

My HOA hired them so I have no idea who these people are. They are apparently used a lot by local HOA's for doing repair in Condo's.

I don't care for leaving people in my house when I'm not home.  I know that bonded contractors risk their business if their employees are up to no good, but still.

I didn't hire them. My HOA did.  My upstairs neighbor had a water leak that destroyed about 1/2 of my Condo.  They are just getting around to fixing it.

I had to let people in when I wasn't home due to massive repairs, and needing to be at the office all the time. Working from home makes things a lot easier, it always made me uncomfortable.

Yeah I would be uncomfortable too, especially with people I don't know.

The last time I had a contractor in my house was 2 years ago when I had my front porch converted into a small addition with a mud room, laundry room, and 1/2 bath.

The contractor who did the work was a personal friend of mine who was also a Deacon in our church.
He has established a great reputation as an honest businessman, and his employees are all family members, so I had zero trust issues allowing those guys in my house when we weren't home.

In your case, if your HOA hired these guys, and they have been around for a while, I guess I would probably be OK with it.
Unless you want to use vacation days to watch what they are doing, or unless you have surveillance cameras in your house, I guess you don't have much choice but to trust them.

Like g said, lock up your valuables and / or don't leave anything of value in plain sight that someone might be tempted to slip into their pocket.

The reviews I've read on these guys isn't stellar. I think that they just do mass repair and bang it out as fast as possible. They only seem to be "available" when there is work to be done in neighboring Condo's. I'm also guessing by the reviews that they have a quick turnover on employees.  That's what makes me a little nervous.

I do have cameras up and I have a safe that I keep anything worth while in.  I have a bunch of electronics around the house, mostly computers, that I would worry about someone messing with.

My HOA has hired these guys to come in to my Condo before but I was there while they were working.  I'm not sure that I'll be able to work that out this time. I've been waiting to get these repairs done since June so I may have to suck it up.

I've been waiting so long to get this done I'm starting to consider looking in to other options. I'm not sure if I could make a case to hire my own contractor to get the work done and send the bill to the HOA. Might be something that I have to talk to someone about.
